The High School’s Alternative programming is a therapeutic school that assists students with their social, emotional, behavioral, vocational and academic needs. Typically, students enrolled in our school have had challenges finding success in the traditional public school setting. We employ a variety of teaching styles to motivate students. Our small class sizes promote student participation and small group work. We value self-advocating and encourage all of our students to take a proactive role in their own education.
Our school utilizes concepts based on a Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support (PBIS) model that encourages and rewards positive behaviors including taking responsibility, being accountable, and displaying positivity as well as concepts that hold students responsible for their actions through natural consequences and restorative justice. The high school offers an academic track and a vocational track.
The program offers a supportive, educational environment for students who struggle social emotionally in a typical educational setting. Our small class sizes, the use of technology, interactive projects, differentiated instruction and experienced staff help to engage and motivate students. We also offer a wide variety of electives, health topics, counseling, social skills, community based activities and educational field trips to support the curriculum. Students have the opportunity to participate in Outdoor Education, Community Service, Transitional Services, Middlesex Community College Dual Enrollment, Vocational Shops and Internships.
Curriculum is aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and the Common Core Standards. Classes are also aligned to meet the credit requirements of each sending school district. Students who meet these graduation requirements and pass MCAS are eligible for a high school diploma from their sending district.
