• Autism, Pragmatic and Sensory Program

Our elementary APS Program provides services designed to meet the needs of elementary students diagnosed not only with Autism but also students who need similar supports due to issues with pragmatic and sensory needs. Additionally, these students may be exhibiting behavioral and learning challenges that make it difficult for them to be successful in their community school. We have the capability to cater to students with a range of cognitive abilities and language needs. The classroom provides consistency, positive reinforcement, predictability, visuals, data driven decisions and individualized behavior support plans. It is Valley's goal to provide each student with frequent and personally meaningful reinforcement, critical to sustaining motivation.

    Social and Behavior Skills Development:

The philosophy is based upon the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) or Verbal Behavior (VB), incorporating sensory programs such as Zones of Regulation and pragmatic programs such as Social Thinking. This approach allows every need of a child to be addressed. Weekly instruction in social skills for all students by a speech pathologist assists in directly teaching skill deficits. Generalization is extremely important and students are provided every opportunity to practice learned skills in a variety of environments. Check out our life skills program for the perfect place to generalize skills.

    Curriculum:

Our curriculum is based upon the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and Common Core requirements. Students receive instruction in literacy, math, language and writing, content areas such as science or social studies with a focus on functionality of skills. We have a variety of curricula to address all students’ needs. The elementary program utilizes a structured assessment system that ensures all students’ goals are individual. Students are then grouped in skill based small learning groups or taught new skills 1:1 for the best academic achievement possible. The curriculum utilizes a teaching approach based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Verbal Behavior (VB) techniques, Direct Instruction, task analysis, integrated therapy techniques and hands on experiences. Some of our students are ready to participate in more typical classroom curriculum and that is readily available to all students.

Teachers have dedicated professional development opportunities in VB and ABA techniques as well as access where appropriate to the literacy and math coaches that the collaborative provides.
